DENKYIRA HERITAGE FOUNDATION BULLETIN – OHENEYERE NANA ADWOA ABORA-SIKA OTI-AKENTEN II

        Dear Denkyira People,
We bring you greetings again. We have told you severally that the version of history about Denkyira you know in the mainstream are deliberate lies spun by people who are afraid of Denkyira’s unity. But do not worry – Denkyira was built by divine beings who know the end from the beginning!
Who is Nana Adwoa Abora-Sika Oti-Akenten II?
During the death of Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa-Amponsem I around 1695, the person to succeed him became a problem. This brought about serious internal family conflict between the faction of Nana Ntim Gyakari and Nana Assenso Kuffuor. Among the supporters of Nana Assenso Kuffuor was Nana Adwoa Abora Oti-Akenten. She was a not just a royal but had special access to the Amponsem Sikadan due to royal privileges. Sikadan was a gold treasury that was built by Ɔdɛɛfoɔ Boa-Amponsem Dakabere I to store gold and golden artifacts of Denkyira.
Nana Adwoa Abora left Abankesieso- Ntoamu with about 1000 maidservants. 500 out of the 1000 carried gold dust each. She left with her priestess called Okomfo Abena and her deity

When she got to Atwima, she settled at Atwima Koforidua. But she met Osei Tutu I and introduced herself as a Denkyira royal with her gold and entourage. Osei Tutu I married her. Due to her enormous wealth, ‘Sika’(money) was added to her name Abora. Thus, her name became Adwoa Abora-Sika. It was because of her that Sika became appellation of Abora. She supported her husband (Osei Tutu I) financially to build the new kingdom.
Benten lands were given to her as her towns. This gave the known axiom, “Benten Asaase nda hɔ kwa, ɛyɛ oheneyere Adwoa-Abora Sika dea.” But this axiom got shortened into , “Pintinn/peteemu asaase nda hɔ kwa.”

Oheneyere is the only Queenmother with 8 towns under Atwima Koforidua in Asante without a chief. She rules as a chief-queen and popularly known as Kurowura. Some of her towns also known as MPRENGO STOOL LANDS are:
- Benten old towns
 - Manhyia Asuogya
 - Mmetiamu
 - Asenemaso North
 - Sepaase Asuoyeboa north
 - Aboaboso
 - Duase
 - Nkyekyerekye
 - Atwima Koforidua
 - Tetengo

During Denkyira Heritage Foundation interview with Black Rasta on 3FM in March 2023, we mentioned her story. Her son watched it and prompted her. She searched for my phone number and called. She asked how we got to know about her because no historian has ever mentioned her story in Ghana and she is not widely known. I told her that those mainstream historians don’t know how Denkyira was built and how it got disintegrated.

The Diapora Relations Committee for the Installation of the 26th Denkyirahene which was chaired by Denkyira Kyidomhene, Nana Oduro Appiako II, visited and extended invitation to her. It had been over 327 since any Denkyira royal or chief at home had visited her. That moment was an emotional moment.
She honoured the invitation and graced the occasion. She was seated just on the right hand side of Denkyirahemaa, Nana Ama Ayensua Saara III right after Apagyahene, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie in state. She was our mother who left but has returned home.
The 26th Denkyirahene coronation and installation ceremony brought people who left over 320 years ago back home. Some will be profiled later.
Your humble servant,
Nana Boadu Ntiamoah
